Gretchen Larson

Artist Gretchen Larson

My "People Pots" are unique in that they represent a blending of potter, sculpture, and the art of caricature. The vague feeling of recognition that the viewer gets peering into the faces incorporated into these pots is understandable because my clay portraits were originally patterned after real people. I was first inspired to try pottery

during the days of Watergate when the distinctive faces of former President Nixon and other political figures appeared on television and in the newspapers every day. Also, a tour through a pre-Columbian exhibit of the National Geographic Society convinced me to experiment with the same idea using political caricature.

The faces on my pots are not added on - I push them out from the inside. They are fired at 1600º in my home kiln, a glaze is added to the inside, and then they are re-fired again at 2300º, which turns the glaze blue.

Just as no two people are alike, no two Larson "People Pots" are alike. My greatest satisfaction comes from the laughs and giggles of people as they look at my pots, or watch me work.
