Carrie Doman

4 Sculptures

Carrie grew up in the shelter of a small farming community in Iowa. While visiting Colorado as a teenager, she found herself drawn to the natural beauty of the state and made plans to someday live here. After moving to Colorado, she married and started her family. While attending ceramic classes at a local community center, she discovered an affinity for pottery. Studies at local colleges, workshops, and time at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center soon followed.

The forms are occasionally created from conscious images but more frequently from the unconscious mind or a combination of the two. Carrie’s goal is to capture a sense of gracefulness and fluidity in these inanimate forms, intending to provoke a sense of movement, while at the same time alluding to images that are just under the surface of consciousness. Her textures invite the viewer to

handle and examine them, revealing how the form alters with each new angle and change of light. To create her unique textural variations, Carrie paints the clay with sodium silicate that is allowed to dry prior to the stretching of the clay.

Carrie continues to find inspiration not only here in Colorado but also in the unique landscapes of the world she experiences in her travels. The versatility of clay continues to fascinate her and allows Carrie to express the playful and whimsical side of her nature.
