Jennifer Rudkin

Birds

Jennifer’s passion for clay began when she was seven years old. Her work continues to exhibit a child’s sense of joy and wonder. Part of her still believes that if she can truly capture the essence of her subject, it will come to life. In recent years she has placed her sculptured animals on antique toy vehicles, to enliven them even more. She likes to think of her sculptures as Fine Art Whimsy.

Jennifer works primarily in ceramics, though she has dabbled in bronze. Every sculpture is handmade and unique, each with its own personality. The work is fired to cone 5, which makes them outdoor safe (provided there are no small appendages). She has developed a technique of using different colored clay bodies in a single pieces so

that contrasting earth tones add vibrancy while the natural beauty of the clay is retained. She then finishes the pieces primarily with stains that highlight the clay’s qualities rather than glazes that cover them.

While Jennifer has only entered a few shows with her work, she has already received top awards for her talented pieces: winning Best of Show in the Lafayette Community Art Show and Judge’s Choice Award in the Louisville Tactile Art Show.
