Sterling Silver and Stone Jewelry
For me, making jewelry is
all about working with the stones. The
silver adds value, of course, and allows the stones to be worn. I
purchase my gems already cut and polished from various lapidary
artists, then I design around the stones. I use a process called
hand fabrication which ensures that each piece of jewelry is
unique. The silver is hand cut and formed, various elements
soldered together, the stones carefully set, and then the whole piece
is polished by hand. It's important to me that the final product
is comfortable and effortless to wear.
I am inspired by the stones and the earth energy they hold. In a
previous life, I spent a lot of time on the rock as a technical rock
climber. But these days I spend more time with rocks in my hands
and wearing them. I am especially motivated to work with opals
from Australia, American turquoise, all manner of fossils, and anything
with natural textures and interesting forms.
My work has been characterized as "other worldly and under water" and
lately seems to exhibit a certain fluidity and flow. Perhaps it
just reflects this perfect time in my life when things are moving along
as they should be.
