Joyce calls herself a “color junkie.” She says, “I truly love color.” This love allows her to work intuitively more often than planning in detail before beginning. She likes to make people feel better and tries to bring a smile to the face of the people that are exposed to her artwork. Her paintings can be described as sensitive, whimsical and sometimes primitive, but always colorful.

She started her career as a screen printer. She made large color field pieces, mostly abstract. Making use of her strong sense of design and composition, she was well suited from printmaking. Eventually though, she missed drawing and turned back to pastel, watercolor and acrylic. Her current work focuses on acrylics with a layering technique that gives depth to the colors on both canvas and paper. Her work features people, creatures and scenes familiar to her. Seeing an individual personality in cats and dogs, she tries to capture the uniqueness of each animal subject.
