Kathleen Laurie

Turtle

From an early age Kathleen knew that she would be an artist. She became a naturalist just by virtue of her environment – a glacially carved forested ravine on the edge of Lake Michigan full of animals, birds, nests, amphibians, and reptiles. Kathleen received her BS from Illinois State University where she studied a broad range of art media She paints, draws, and splashes layers of bright colors on the clay form and will often use turtles as a design element. Kathleen’s forms are slabs of earthenware draped over a

hump mold. The covered jars are thrown on the wheel and distorted. Rabbits, dogs and cats are sculpted on top of the jars.

Kathleen’s studio is in Evergreen, Colorado where she continues to push the boundaries of clay expression as it relates to the natural world around her.

Care Note: This work is created from earthenware (aka terra cotta). This is very porous clay so it will not hold wet or oily materials. The artist recommends that the piece be used for decoration or dry food such as crackers or bread. This piece cannot be placed in the dishwasher, microwave or oven. Please hand wash as needed.
