MJ Butler
Fiber & Mixed Media Art Dolls
I grew up learning to
sew, first watching my mom, and before long
beginning my own projects, creating garments and sometimes quilts and
dolls clothes. I also enjoyed playing with dolls of all kinds:
paper dolls, baby dolls, and fashion dolls. Dolls made by my mom
and grandmother are treasures in my collection today.
My BFA in Art Education degree provided a general art background, and
while I enjoy working with a variety of media, my interest frequently
circles back to fabric-related projects. My interest in quilting
really exploded when I discovered the fun of using raw-edge fabric
collage and the speed and definition of machine quilting.
Most of my dolls incorporate an element of quilting or fabrics. I
also enjoy exploring natural materials and have used weathered bones,
sticks, seed pods and other found objects in making my dolls. Our
Colorado landscape offers a generous supply of lovely organic forms
that often become arms, legs and even heads.
